Mavis has the sweetest soul and needs a forever home that can offer patience and protection. Mavis has some special needs – number one being that she needs someone trusted to scoop her up for cuddles multiple times per day, and stare into those deep soulful eyes. Mavis came into rescue care with a number of obvious physical issues. She was just skin and bone. But also centre of attention of everyone involved with her care. After some time, love, understanding, and lots of food, she is approaching a healthy weight – a vet examination confirmed that she does have some permanent neurological challenges. But we think these challenges might be opportunities for the right forever adopter: Mavis is profoundly deaf. This has really only caused a couple of challenges – she will not hear you calling for her, but she will call for you if you have forgotten to fill the food bowl. She currently lives in a foster home with many other cats/kittens and two dogs – and co-exists quite happily most of the time – but she can not hear them coming if they blunder up behind her – and sometimes when surprised and given a fright, she will lash out in self-defence. Nothing more than a yell and punch to the nose of her surprise visitor, but she would need forgiving friends, or a safe space to make her own. Any children in her forever home would need to be old enough to understand and respect that she does not like a fright. It’s possible she has some minor vision difficulties as well, it may take her a little more time to focus on objects. Mavis has some fine motor control issues, which causes a wobbly walk, and a bobbing head – and she does tend to throw her food around when eating. But we have noticed that as she puts on healthy weight, and with that extra muscle, has lost some of her “wobblyness”. Possibly due to these sensory issues, it takes Mavis a little while to work out changes in her environment – it may take some repeated reminding where the litter tray is, or where to find the food bowl. But she knows what to do once she’s found it. Mavis also has “proprioception” issues – issues understanding her own body’s position relative to itself and other items around her. She can be a little clumsy if she’s in a hurry, or if she’s been given a fright. It also manifests in that Mavis is a FLOOR cat only. She will not climb or jump up onto objects or furniture. She can step over small obstacles, but will not climb a step, or jump onto a table. She does not like being placed on objects, and usually jumps off as soon as she can figure out how. PERFECT for someone who does not want a keyboard-sitter! Or if you have valuables on high shelves! Your delicacies are also safe on the kitchen bench. Mavis does love to be swept up for a gentle cuddle, and a soft pat around the head – but usually only for a short time, before she sees something she’s interested in and wants to be put down. She’s very low maintenance once she has established a safe place and a set of routines – and is not shy to tell you if she wants something, with her cute demanding miaow. In other respects Mavis is perfectly healthy – has no specific veterinary needs or special food requirements, and is a genuine heart melter. Mavis just needs a forever home with someone who has a heart as big as hers. Medical notes Mavis is a special cat with manageable neurological challenges. She has some sensory issues – deafness, possible limited visual acuity, crooked tail, some fine motor skills issues – proprioception issues. Despite these challenges, Mavis is a happy, healthy cat. She is desexed, microchipped, up to date with vaccinations, flea and worm treated.
